Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy (New Insights and Directions for Religious Epistemology) (two positions)

Applications are invited for two full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellows, to work on the project New Insights and Directions for Religious Epistemology , which is hosted by the Faculty of Philosophy, and supported by the John Templeton Foundation. The Fellowships are fixed-term for the period 1 September 2014 to 30 September 2015. The salary will be at grade 7 on the University scale: £29,837 per annum.

The postholders will occupy an office in Radcliffe Humanities Woodstock Road, Oxford.

The Project, valued at £1.3million and directed by Professor John Hawthorne, has been made possible by the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation. It aims to bring recent developments in epistemology to bear on topics in the philosophy of religion in a way that will open up new channels of research in religious epistemology. The project is centred around, but not limited to, interesting and novel applications developing out of six main topics: (i) contextualism and pragmatic encroachment; (ii) safety and knowledge; (iii) epistemic defeat; (iv) testimony; (v) formal epistemology; and (vi) etiology of belief.

You must demonstrate expertise in epistemology and/or philosophy of religion, with evidence of the ability to undertake significant research in philosophy which will contribute to the aims of the project. It is expected that the successful candidates will author several publications as a direct consequence of their involvement with the project. You must hold a Bachelor/Master’s degree and have completed or be close to the completion of a PhD.

You will work under the guidance of the Director of the Project, Professor John Hawthorne, and will also be expected to work in collaboration with other members of the Project’s team and with external collaborators.

Project Administrator

Grade 5: £23,585 - £25,759 per annum (pro rata)

Applications are invited for a part-time (0.5FTE, 18.25 hours per week) Project Administrator within the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University. The post is fixed-term until 30 September 2015, the end date of the Project.

You will provide administrative support to the major research Project New Insights and Directions for Religious Epistemology, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, and directed by Professor John Hawthorne. You will play a key role in ensuring the continued success of the Project and will work closely with the Director and others associated with the Project. You will be responsible for planning and organising events, managing the Project’s finances, promoting and keeping records of its activities, maintaining the Project website, drafting reports and correspondence, and you will play a role in identifying and seeking opportunities for further external research funding.

You will have administrative experience in a higher education institution or similar environment (as a result of work or study), and experience of successfully organizing events. You will demonstrate the ability to learn quickly and you will be able to work effectively both on your own and as part of a small team. You will be willing to accept responsibility, and able to apply a flexible approach to a varied workload. Experience of preparing written reports, of using Oracle Financials, and of designing or maintaining websites would be an advantage.
